Wet Desert, a Novel

by: Gary Hansen
Grant Stevens, a mid-level manager for the Bureau of Reclamation, only wanted to build dams. He never imagined he would be swept into a desperate race against an environmental terrorist bent on restoring the Colorado River by blowing up the dams. Left temporarily in charge of the Bureau, Grant must react when the first dam is attacked. He faces the unthinkable task of mitigating the massive flood roaring down the Colorado. The flood will eventually threaten the mighty Hoover Dam, and if Hoover fails, the other dams downstream will fall like dominos.

The story of Hoover Dam

ARC Identifier 37058 / Local Identifier 115.31. Explains the overwhelming need to control and regulate the raging waters of the Colorado River; the 1928 passage of the Boulder Canyon Project authorizing construction of the Hoover Dam; the ensuing construction of diversion tunnels and then the dam itself; building of support facilities, such as a steel fabrication plant for giant pipe construction; and creation of hydroelectric operations that provided electricity to California, Nevada, and Arizona. Also details how Lake Mead evolved into a successful recreational area as a result of the dam construction. Department of the Interior. Bureau of Reclamation. (06/20/1923 - 11/06/1979)

Construction of Hoover Dam, 1933-1935

Originally called Boulder Dam, the Hoover Dam straddles the border of Arizona and Nevada. Construction began in 1933 and was completed two years later. Built with 3.2 million cubic yards of concrete, the dam is some 726 feet high, ranking 20th in the world for height. From 1939 to 1949 it was the worlds largest producer of hydroelectric power; today the dam generates some 4.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Lake Mead, the reservoir created by the dam, covers 247 square miles and is a major recreation area. Construction footage of the building of Hoover Dam.
